I UNDERSTAND

Once upon a long time ago, my 4 year old granddaughter and I had a serious heart-to-heart.  She had gotten crosswise with her mother, and she resented the scolding or punishment or whatever.

She was royally pistoff with her mother (who, incidentally was absolutely right about the correction).  She didn't come to me to bend my sympathetic ear, but I invited her to my room.  We lay on the bed and gazed out the window to the woods.  We talked about this and that, then I tried to ease into peacemaker role - the object being that I hoped she could see that her mother was right in whatever it was.

"Sometimes it's hard to be good," I sez, trying to ease up on the subject sideways.

"Yeah," she sez, "but sometimes I just don't want to be good."

Some might have an answer for that.  For me it was a classic non sequitur.

Apples, trees.  What can I say?

I understand.  I really do.
